Argentina naming league in honor of sunken warship

As tension rises over the 30th anniversary of the deadly war between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands, the Argentine government has named the upcoming football season in honor a naval ship sunk by British torpedoes in the conflict. The season, which begins Friday, will be the known as the first division "Crucero General Belgrano," or Cruiser General Belgrano in English.

Michel close to taking over as Sevilla coach

Sevilla says it is negotiating with Jose Miguel "Michel" Gonzalez to take over as coach from the fired Marcelino Garcia Toral. The Spanish club says on its website that Michel, a former Real Madrid and Spain player, is in line to coach Sevilla until the end of the season. Michel has been without a coaching job since leaving Getafe at the end of last season.

DC United sign veteran midfielder Marcelo Saragosa

D.C. United have signed midfielder Marcelo Saragosa, who returns to MLS after two seasons in Azerbaijan. The 30-year-old Brazilian will be playing for his fourth MLS club. He played in 116 games with the Los Angeles Galaxy, FC Dallas and Chivas USA from 2004-10. Saragosa left MLS following the 2010 season to play in the Azerbaijan first division, first with FC Absheron and then with Ravan Baku.
Valencia having knee surgery, out 6-to-12 months

Newly acquired Portland Timbers forward Jose Adolfo Valencia will be sidelined for 6-to-12 months following knee surgery. Valencia, son of former Colombia national team star Adolfo Valencia, was to have damaged cartilage in his left knee repaired Monday by team director of medicine Dr. Jonathan E. Greenleaf.

The San Jose Earthquakes have signed well-traveled Colombian midfielder Tressor Moreno to a contract pending him acquiring his visa. The team announced the move Thursday. The 33-year-old Moreno has appeared in matches for teams in Colombia, France, Chile, Mexico and Peru, while also making a number of appearances for the Colombian national team.
Buddle returns to Galaxy after a year in Germany

Edson Buddle returned to the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday after a year in the German second division, adding yet another scoring talent to the defending MLS champions' star-studded roster. The 30-year-old American forward re-signed with the Galaxy one day after his contract was terminated by Ingolstadt.
